A quick video I made for inspiration. By flipping my classroom to do project-based learing (PBL), which has students participate in the Design Thinking Process I could see my students creating to demonstrate their learning. If we want students to be creating then we must also develop their growth mindset.
How do you help students be innovative?
Without Growth Mindset there can be no creativity, and without creativity there is no innovation.
Kids need to feel cared for and secure (Nurture) through connecting with their teachers, classmates, and school (Community and Culture). They are designed to be curious and explore (Inquiry), and then they create (Creativity). Now they can Innovate and share, express themselves and their thinking, reflect and analyze - all with confidence and pride. Picture a preschool child who writes his name for the first time, colors it, and comes running to show you his masterpiece. No matter how primitive it is, the pride in his accomplishment, the spark in his eyes, and the smile on his face gives you no choice but to see a masterpiece too. All children learn at their own pace and in their own way. As educators, we need to celebrate growth, so that they continue to persevere as proud and confident learners. I see masterpieces in all my students, and that is what fuels my passion to teach and to improve my teaching every day. It is time to spark innovation, and I want to be an educator who ignites that flame.

Welcome to my 21st Century Innovative Learning website. This site is dedicated to explaining the flipped model, combined with inductive teaching strategies (inquiry/discovery, problem, and project-based learning, also known as active learning strategies) for teachers, parents, educators, administrators, superintendents, and educational policy makers. My main emphasis is in mathematics education at the middle school level.
I want my capstone website to help people understand the new technologies and the flipped model, and how these tools lend themselves nicely to inquiry and blended learning environments, in order to decrease the achievement gap and increase performance for all children.
I share my own action research here, and my inspiration to flip my classroom - which freed up class time for inquiry/discovery, deeper problem-solving, and project-based learning, including various active-learning strategies.
I will also share resources for different activities and student work samples, as well as videos of some of the activities I used. These activities make learning fun for students, the way learning should be. Students are not spending class time listening to boring math lessons and taking notes, but are truly engaged in meaningful education instead.
These inductive/active-learning strategies provide richer learning experiences for students that will engage, motivate and empower them and allow them to have fun, while still achieving statistically significant growth in performance!
My goal is to help improve mathematics education at the middle-school level for all students, and this site will serve as a record of my methods, challenges, and successes.
